I was once Inflexible and angry... I started with yoga over ten years ago, but at that time it felt like an effort to go to class. I was often restless during meditation and didn't understand how anyone could train the mind to be 'empty'. I made it to yoga class a few times a week, but for one reason or another, the peacefulness experienced after class was fleeting and seemingly detatched from the rest of my life.
Jump forward 4 years and to a different continent and city, Amsterdam, where I found myself in a premature mid-life crisis. I was stressed and uninspired at my job and my health showed signs of a weakened immune system and general dis-ease. I woke up one morning with the realization that if I were to die tomorrow, I would not have felt that I had really 'lived'. What was my purpose in life? What was I waiting for?
From that point on something clicked on the mat, and I became steadily more and more devoted to my yoga practice. I found a studio that encouraged me to look beyond the asana practice for the foundation to my practice, and my lifestyle began to align more and more to my yoga practice.I found myself meditating undisturbed and looking for my next yoga class as the highlight of my day. I became less angry and more loving.
Eventually, I found the Jivamukti style yoga method which felt like finding home. Integrating music and spiritual teachings together with a rigorous vinyasa class meant that after each class I felt energized, positive and alive. I had the opportunity to do my teacher training with Sharon Gannon and David Life, the founders of the Jivamukti yoga method, which became yet another transformative life experience.
Through yoga, I have learned that life is but a series of transformations, everything around us is changing all the time. It is when we can connect to our Self, the blessed, unchanging being within, that we become empowered and responsible for uncovering the wonder, joy and happiness that awaits us.
